Introduction: Unraveling 

There can be times in life when everything feels uncertain and confusing. I call this feeling "Unraveling." It's like when all the knots in our thoughts and feelings come undone. This happens to everyone, and it's a chance to start fresh and create a better life, a better understanding, or a better foundation. When things seem chaotic, we can choose to focus on positive thoughts and feelings. This choice can lead to a happier and more fulfilling life. This Introduction explores how thinking positively and feeling good can help us in different ways, like making better decisions and getting along with others, and ourselves. The overall message is that even when life feels messy, we have the power to make it better by choosing to think positively and feel good.


There are moments in our lives when the threads of what we have known life to be seem to unravel, leaving us in a state of uncertainty and vulnerability “naked and afraid”. I fondly refer to this stage of evolution “Unraveling”. It is the state where all the knots come out, where we work out all the twists and pain that have been a part of our body and mind for so long. The sensation of coming undone, whether due to external circumstances or internal struggles, is a universal human experience. It is in these moments of unraveling that we confront the profound question of how to navigate the complex interplay between our thoughts, emotions, and the unpredictable nature of the world, it is also where we have the privilege to discover that we actually also have the power of choice over all of those things. It is where we are given the invitation to begin again, to create the life we want from the ashes of the one we are currently in the process of leaving behind in pursuit of our dreams or higher purpose.

Coming unraveled takes grit. It takes faith, and discipline, to see the journey through to the other side. When one comes unraveled, the world may appear as chaotic, each thread of our beings entangled in a disarray of uncertainty. Yet, within this apparent chaos lies a choice, a choice not to squander energy on circumstances beyond our control or on the uncertain outcomes that lay ahead.  In what appears as chaos the divine can work, and in chaos, change can happen, the true, transformative, rewarding kind that changes our lives for the good forever.  This introductory chapter explores the wisdom of channeling our focus toward what we can create, the power of redirecting our thoughts to positive and affirming ones, and the transformative potential that lies in the simple act of feeling good.

The notion of saving or focusing our energy on what we can control versus avoiding wasting energy on the uncontrollable and the unknown is not just a pragmatic approach to life, it resonates with psychological, sociological, and philosophical perspectives. It is well known that focusing on what we want to create is one of the keys to freedom from suffering. To decode emotions effectively, mindfulness serves as the foundational step. Awareness, the gateway to emotional understanding, demands a precise acknowledgment of the specific emotion experienced. In a personal example, frustration emerged as the identified emotion, unraveling a cascade of subsequent realizations.

Step 2: Embracing Acceptance

The seemingly simple act of accepting emotions proves challenging. Reflecting on past tendencies to avoid negative emotions through busyness or substance use, the second step emphasizes the importance of embracing emotions without resistance. This acknowledgment opens a window into unmet needs.

Step 3: Appreciation of Negative Emotions

Gratitude for negative emotions might appear counterintuitive. However, appreciating emotions as guiding forces fosters a transformative perspective. Viewing frustration as a compass towards unsatisfied needs allowed for a pause, preventing reactionary behavior.

Feeling like you are stuck can be considered a common experience. Getting out of a rut often involves a combination of mental, emotional, and behavioral strategies. Here are some effective ways to break free from a rut:
