Grammar: 4 Types of Conditional Sentences

Level: Intermediate

Time: 40 minutes

Introduction:

In English, conditional sentences are used to express possibilities, hypothetical situations, or consequences. Today, we will learn about the 4 types of conditional sentences: Zero, First, Second, and Third conditionals. Each type shows a different level of possibility or time frame (present, future, or past).

Vocabulary:

  1. Conditional Sentence – A sentence that expresses a condition (if something happens) and a result (then something will happen).

  2. Zero Conditional – Used for general truths or facts. The structure is: If + present simple, present simple.Example: If you heat water, it boils.

  3. First Conditional – Used for real or possible situations in the future. The structure is: If + present simple, will + base verb.Example: If it rains, I will stay home.

  4. Second Conditional – Used for imaginary or unlikely situations. The structure is: If + past simple, would + base verb.Example: If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.

  5. Third Conditional – Used for past situations that didn’t happen. The structure is: If + past perfect, would have + past participle.Example: If I had studied, I would have passed the exam.

Reading Passage:

"The Four Seasons of Conditionals"

Imagine there is a park near your house, and you visit it often. Depending on the season and weather, you plan different activities. Here’s how conditionals work in different situations:

  • Zero Conditional:If I go to the park in summer, I wear sunglasses. (It's always sunny in summer, so it’s a fact.)

  • First Conditional:If it rains tomorrow, I will take an umbrella. (The weather forecast shows possible rain, so you prepare for the future.)

  • Second Conditional:If I were rich, I would build a playground in the park. (You are not rich, but you are imagining what you would do.)

  • Third Conditional:If I had known about the picnic last week, I would have gone to the park. (You didn’t know, so you missed it, but now you are imagining the past.)
