What Your Elimination Says About Your Digestion

What Your Elimination Says About Your Digestion and How To Get It On Your Side

How do we make our bodies work for us? How do we get them to support us in our goals?

In natural medicine and specifically Ayurveda, goals in general are extremely helpful. If our goal is optimal health or peak performance, then that’s going to be a lot different than chasing a temporary result that leaves you empty; it becomes a beautiful, daily practice of coming home to yourself.

In fact, our bodies are already remarkably brilliant at cleaning themselves. We don’t need to force a "detox" in the way the modern world suggests—we just need to support the wisdom already residing within us. The best we can do is provide the right environment for these natural processes to thrive.

daily (get up at 8am, have a productive work life, win a football game etc- whatever it is for you) and weekly (finish a project, stay healthy, feel your best), and life goals (be able to lift your grandchildren, move a couch at 50 years old, walk a kilometer, raft the Grand Canyon...)

The formula for staying healthy is pretty simple: eat cooked vegetables, eat only what your body can process ie wait for a bowel movement before you eat again, balance your moods by honoring your soul, increase your vitality, and peace of mind. Sometimes, the most profound wisdom is found in the simplest, most human functions. In the tradition of the Charak Samhita, and as frequently emphasized by modern masters like Dr. Vasant Lad and Dr. John Douillard, your daily elimination is your most honest diagnostic tool. It is the clearest window into the state of your Agni, or digestive fire, which is the cornerstone of your entire well-being.

So, what does a "perfect" bowel movement actually look like? In a balanced state, it should be well-formed, often compared to the shape and consistency of a ripe banana. It should pass with ease, without straining or a sense of urgency, and ideally occur shortly after waking. A healthy stool is typically a light, brownish-yellow color and, interestingly, should have a relatively neutral or mild odor. If you notice a foul or rotting smell, it is a classic Ayurvedic indicator that ama, or undigested toxins, has accumulated in the system.

One point of common curiosity is the "float test." In many modern circles, floating stool is sometimes misconstrued, but in Ayurvedic wisdom, a healthy stool that floats is actually considered a sign of Nirama—the absence of ama. Because optimal digestion processes food efficiently, the resulting waste is light enough to remain buoyant. When digestion is sluggish or overwhelmed, the waste becomes heavy, dense, and sticky, often causing it to sink and suggesting that your digestive fire needs a little bit of support.

It is important to remember that while there is an "ideal," your own prakriti, or unique doshic constitution, can influence your baseline. Vata-dominant individuals may have stools that lean toward the drier side, Pitta-dominant types might experience faster transit times, and Kapha-dominant constitutions often have a heavier, smoother elimination. However, the goal of Ayurveda isn’t to force everyone into the exact same mold; it is to recognize when your personal baseline has drifted into imbalance. If you find yourself experiencing persistent constipation, extreme heat or looseness, or a feeling of incompleteness, it is your body’s way of asking for a recalibration of your diet and lifestyle.

Ultimately, reading these signs shouldn't be a source of stress. Instead, treat your daily elimination as a quiet, private practice of self-awareness. When you eat with attention, choose foods that align with the current season, and respect your body’s need for regular, rhythmic routines, you are building the foundation for long-term health. By paying attention to these simple, daily rhythms, you aren't just managing digestion—you are mastering the art of living in harmony with yourself.

Think of your daily habits as the systems that assist this internal cleanup crew. It starts with sound sleep; science tells us our brains literally flush out waste while we rest, clearing the way for a fresh start the next morning. Hydration is our next great ally, giving the liver and kidneys the fluid they need to filter and flush what we no longer need. Fiber acts as the broom, sweeping through our system to carry away what the body is ready to release. And, of course, movement—keeping your blood circulating ensures those hardworking organs receive the oxygen and energy they need to perform their best.

When we shift from "forcing" a result to "supporting" our body’s natural intelligence, we stop fighting against ourselves. We aren't just hitting a goal; we are building a life-long system of care. When we set a goal and take the steps to meet it the goal is achievable.
