It's a vibe and I choose to embody it

Embracing My Canadian Identity, Scottish Roots, and the Legacy of Viking Women: Strength Across Generations

As a proud Canadian with Scottish ancestry, I’ve always felt a deep connection to my heritage. And as I’ve explored the stories of Viking women, I’ve come to realize how much their legacy—one of resilience, independence, and courage—reflects the very qualities I cherish as both a Canadian and a woman. The Viking influence on Scottish culture, and their indomitable spirit, inspire me every day as I forge my own path across borders.

The Scottish-Viking Connection

The histories of Scotland and the Vikings are intricately intertwined, a tale of both conflict and cooperation. When Norse seafarers set foot on Scottish soil, particularly in the Orkney and Shetland Islands, the Hebrides, and parts of the mainland, they brought with them their customs and way of life, blending Viking traditions into Scottish society. Today, many Scots, myself included, can trace their ancestry to Viking settlers. This shared legacy is alive in the language, place names, and folklore that echo the strength and resilience of both cultures.

Can You Be Scottish and a Viking?

Absolutely! The Vikings didn’t just leave behind their ships and plundered treasures; they left behind their bloodlines, too. Their influence on Scotland is profound, and many Scots carry Viking ancestry. Whether it’s in the shape of our landscapes or the spirit of innovation and independence that runs through our veins, the Viking legacy is an integral part of Scotland's identity.

The Strength of Viking Women

Viking women were ahead of their time, defying the limitations placed on them by society. They owned property, initiated divorce, fought as warriors, and played an active role in commerce. These women were not only survivors—they were leaders, innovators, and warriors in their own right. Their strength and independence serve as an inspiration to me as I navigate my own life.

Drawing Parallels: Viking Women, Scots, and My Journey

Independence and Ownership

Just as Viking women could own and manage property, I’ve embraced my own autonomy—building businesses, creating opportunities, and charting my own course, whether running wellness retreats in Central America or crafting digital marketing campaigns. Like my Viking ancestors, I value independence and the freedom to control my own destiny.

Courage in the Face of Adversity

Viking and Scottish women share a unique bravery—whether on the battlefield or in the home, they faced challenges head-on. As a Canadian woman of Scottish descent, I carry that same courage within me. From pursuing new careers to tackling challenges as an entrepreneur, I find inspiration in their determination and resilience.

Crafts and Commerce

Viking women were skilled in crafts, using their artistry to support their families and communities. The Scots, too, have a long tradition of craftsmanship—from tartans to textiles. This tradition of creative work and commerce echoes in my own career, where I blend creativity with digital strategy, carefully crafting content and campaigns that tell meaningful stories.

Community and Connection

Both Viking and Scottish cultures placed great value on community and connection—principles that I carry into my work as well. Whether building supportive business networks or nurturing personal relationships, I strive to foster a sense of belonging and mutual respect, just as my ancestors would have.

The Canadian Spirit: Resilience, Inclusivity, and Strength

Being Canadian means embracing a blend of diverse identities and histories. The intertwined legacies of the Vikings, the Scots, and my Canadian identity are threads in the fabric of my life. Canada’s cultural values of inclusivity and respect provide the perfect environment for me to honor my heritage while creating a future of innovation and connection.

Celebrating Heritage and Moving Forward

The lessons from both Viking women and my Scottish ancestors are timeless. Strength comes not only from independence but also from the ability to build communities and collaborate.

As a Canadian, I take pride in carrying forward this rich heritage—using it as a guiding light in everything I do. Whether it's through the content I create, the businesses I support, or the relationships I build, I aim to embody the spirit of resilience, creativity, and courage shared by my ancestors. It is their legacy that pushes me to break boundaries, create meaningful work, and continue building communities that thrive on connection and respect.

Through my journey, I strive to honor the qualities that both Viking women and Canadians share: strength, independence, and the courage to build a better world.
